Opinion on Weight loss and muscle training.

Resolved Question:

I have attached a document that I put together with my background and list of observed symptoms. My initial concern was something to do with my Thyroid, as different symptoms that I have noticed over time are associated with it.

I have been to my local family physician and had a general blood test done, but it indicates that all of my numbers are fine. However, I do not feel fine, so I would like to get a second opinion.

Thank you in advance

Hello,

Thank you for asking your query at DoctorSpring and giving a detailed description of your symptoms.

Regarding the first two sets of symptom patterns it is more likely to be normal physiological variation rather than an ‘organic illness’. This is especially true regarding the temperature regulation. (Considering you have done the basic blood tests and ruled out a Thyroid illness). This is especially true regarding the temperature regulation issues.

Regarding the weight issues I am pretty sure that you are doing the classical mistake of trying to lose weight and gain muscle at same time. This is extremely difficult process and will leave you nowhere. Trust me on this.

What you should do is a high intensity workout, (no weight training) maintain calorie intake less than 1500 per day. Reach the desired weight and then work up for muscles.

If you do strength training – you will over shoot your calorie requirement (as body really pushes for the nutrients). But since you control your intake, you will not get adequate proteins. So basically you have the risk of getting stuck with a status quo.

Appetite, lack of sleep and concentration issues need evaluation. As of now the symptoms are non-specific. By non-specific I mean it is difficult to come to a conclusive diagnosis. So you will need a baseline evaluation which should include :-
1. Complete blood count
2. ESR,
3. CRP
4. Thyroid Function Tests
5. CPK
6. Renal Function Tests
7. Liver Function Tests
8. Sleep Study.

The ones which are recently done need not be repeated. This will rule out any organic cause. Last but not least do not disregard a Psychological component of the issue. I can see that you have analyzed and classified the symptoms thoroughly. However a psychological component (not just anxiety) can only be accessed by a third party. So please be open about. So if the tests all come out negative and the symptoms still persist do consider a physoclogical evaluation .
Hope this helps

Thank you
