Bad rash on lower legs swapping between legs

Resolved Question:

I got a bad rash on my left lower leg and ankle in Paris 7 weeks ago, but didn't know what it was at the time and did nothing for a week. On my return to London I was then diagnosed as having Cellutitis and given Flucloxacillin 500 mg (1 x 4 hours)

I immediately traveled to Brazil where I live. The Flucloxacillin almost worked by the new doctor (Brazilian) took me off these antibiotics and gave me prescription anti-inflammatory drugs instead (Spidufen 770 mg). After a week the infection on my leg not only got worse, but swapped over to my other leg.

Then this doc gave me more antibiotics (Proflox ciprofloxacino 500 mg). After a week these didn't work too well. The pain had gone but there was still a lot of swelling below the knee and foot. I did stay a lot of the time with my legs raised up a bit but it would hurt to walk when all the blood came flooding back.

I went to see another doctor (an infectologist). He put me on Clavulin amoxicilina 1000 mg. A week later still the same, but now the infection/swelling went back to the left leg again. By now one leg and foot was still swollen and at times would appear a bit red in places. This doc sent me to a vascular doctor.

The vascular doctor put me on a course of 1 injection every five days (3 jabs in total - Benzetacil). Today is the end of this course and it has made no difference at all (other than to swap legs again).

Today I have been back to see both the last two doctors and neither know what it is. I'm now booked in to have almost every possible test there is, which I am not happy with.

I live in a small city and I believe there is a level of experience missing which I would not find say in London. i was hoping that by contacting you I would encounter a much higher degree of experience. I hope so.

A few points:

- Since the first set of antibiotics nearly killed the infection I haven't had much pain in the affected area, it just hurt when the blood rushes there and is a bit sensitive.
- I've had not other side effects like vomiting or fever or loss of appetite etc
- It's interesting how when one of the legs is almost totally healed the infection gets passed over to the other leg. It's changed over 4 times now.
-Sometimes the red marks show up on the upper parts below the knee, with very sharp lines - as if I'd been sunburned exactly in one place uncovered by shorts or some material.
- There have been patches of dark skin, but nothing too serious and it usually doesn't hang around for a day or so.

Many thanks,

Patrick

Hello,

Thanks for your consult at DoctorSpring.com. I can understand your concern.

The change in the colour of your legs indicate that it may be due to varicose or stasis eczema which is a condition that occurs in individuals having varicose veins. Repeated episodes of cellulitis is a part of the eczema. Celulitis is due to bacterial infection on an already affected skin due to eczema.

I would recommend that you visit the vascular doctor and discuss the possibility of varicose veins and how to go about its management.

Also your blood sugar should be checked to rule out the diabetes.

The stasis eczema needs to be treated by first managing the underlying cause of varicose veins, application of a steroid and antibiotic combination cream after the cellulitis gets treated will be beneficial.

Hope this helps, Please let me know if you have any queries.

Take care
