Can HCV cause elevated BILIRUBIN, LIVER ENZYMES?

Resolved Question:

Hello,

I have a question regarding some lab results that I received last week. Mainly regarding liver enzymes and bilirubin. My results are attached.  Otherwise I am a healthy maile 165lbs, 5'10" in my mid thirties.

Back in 2010 I made a stupid mistake at a bachelor party of receiving unprotected oral sex from a stripper. This as far as I know is my only risk factor and happened once. I am very worried that these results could be indicating HCV. It is my understanding that HCV is not commonly spread with oral sex but I am still worried.

In January of 2014 I had a routine physical and that physical showed slightly elevated bilirubin.
This year in January of 2015 I had a routine physical and it shows a very slightly elevated AST and very slightly elevated bilirubin.

My questions are:

1) How at risk would I be for HCV given my risk factors? The stripper did have a tongue ring, would that increase the risk?
2) Would the results that I have attached be worriesome, regarding HCV?
3) It has been 5 years since my "incident" would I expect to see these numbers in an HCV infection?
4) I am married now, and am worried about me spreading HCV. Would you consider my spouse at risk?

Thank you for any feedback.

Hello,
Thank you for your query at DoctorSpring.com
I understand your concern.
I have reviewed your results, the liver enzymes are very mildly elevated and there is nothing to be worried about.
Any history of current drinking? Or do you have a history of alcohol consumption?
Regarding HCV, it can't be transmitted through oral sex. HCV can be transmitted through contaminated blood products, perinatally, or through sexual intercourse ( mostly anal ). So please do not worry about HCV or HBV for that matter from the exposure you had.
For the liver to heal, please avoid spicy or high protein diet food for the time being. Also you can try syrup silymarin twice daily for about a month, and check your values again. They should be normal.
Hope this was helpful,
Dr. Jaydeep.

Thank you for your answer. That makes me feel better! I do not drink on a regular basis. Very seldom on weekends. Maybe once a month or so.
I do excercise quite a bit as well. Is it possible AST and bilirubin are elevated as a result of excersise?
Thank You

Hello,
That's a good thing that you have pretty much no history of regular drinking.
Then the liver will recover faster.
If you have no associated symptoms repeat your LFT values in a month and let me know.
Also, no it is not related to exercise.
Regards.
