Elevated PLATELET levels after SPLENECTOMY. Cause?

Resolved Question:

Hello!

I am 24 years old, and generally very healthy. I walk or ride my bike everywhere, and do not drink very much alcohol nor smoke. Last March I had a splenectomy and my platelet number last time I was tested in November was about 500, so a little high. Anyways, I am in finals right now and have been spending long days studying at my desk. About two weeks ago, I got up from studying and on the right/posterior part of the left knee I started to feel this strange discomfort. When I was sitting, I was sitting with my legs crossed (indian style due to lack of a better description) or sometimes I would sit on top of my legs, I know that's not good especially for a 24 year old, but it was comfortable at the time...

It's been two weeks and the discomfort has not gone away. It feels really strange, there is no real pain, just discomfort. It feels like there is a weakness, and kind of numbness from my knee down. Mostly a weakness. With my high platelet level, and the visible veins in the spot that my leg is uncomfortable, I was freaked out thinking it was a blood clot and went to the doctor. I mentioned all this to my doctor and she told me to wait a week and take an anti inflammatory medication, so I am on movalis (I am in Spain, I don't know if there is another name for it).

I feel this weird popping sensation at the back of the left knee, above the calf a little to the right, where the knee bends, and the weakness in the knee/popping or pulsing at the bend is freaking me out. The doctor didn't listen to my leg or anything and told me it was related to tendon. Sometimes I feel this weird whoosh almost as if either really cool water or warm warm was dripping down my leg. I'm not sure what to do...it's freaking me out.

Hello,
Thanks for your query at DoctorSpring.com
As the platelets are important in Clotting mechanism, their increase or decrease can affect the blood clotting mechanism.
In your case, first get a Colour Doppler of the affected lower limb to exclude vascular problems or any collection in the affected area.
If it is normal, then you have to consult a Neurologist and get Nerve conduction studies and ELECTROMYOGRAPHY (EMG).
Till then, please use the medicine prescribed by your doctor.
Keep your limb in a comfortable and relaxed position.
Get your latest Platelet levels.
Hope I answered your query. If you have any questions, I will clarify further.
If you come back with above reports, I will explain.
Wish you good health.
Regards.
