Birth control pills and its effect on pregnancy.

Resolved question:
Hi Doctor

I will be married in some days. After 2/3 days of marriage I will go for honeymoon. In those days my wife and me decided that we will do intercourse without condom.
My wife is fine with taking birth control pills. When and how many days prior she should start taking those pills?
Please suggest good OCP.

Hello Soumik,

Thanks for writing to DoctorSpring.com with your health concern.

There are various brand of birth control pills available in the market, and all are more or less comparable in terms of efficacy.
Newer pills like Femilon, Marvelon have less incidence of side effects.
They should be started on the 1st or 2nd day of her periods.

She should take the pills consistently for a month prior to having unprotected sex.
For the first month of pill use, backup method like condoms is advisable, so let her take it for a month before you intend to have unprotected sex.

It is best to consult a gynecologist and go through a medical eligibility checklist before starting OCP.

All the best
Please feel free to discuss further.

Is Privolut -N is a good option for delaying period?
Can it be used as a contraception?
Which days of period should be avoided to not to risk pregnancy?

Expert:  Dr. Aarti Vazirani replied 3 Days.

Hello again
Thank you for the appreciation.
Primolut N can be used for delaying period.
It should be started 5 days before the expected period, and continued as long as she does not wish to menstruate.
Once the drug is stopped, withdrawal bleeding will occur within a week.
Primolut N is NOT a contraceptive at all.
It should not be used for contraceptive purposes.
Generally, pregnancy results from unprotected sex that happens between day 10 and day 20 of a cycle , if her periods are regular 28 day ones, and first day of period is counted as day 1.
However, it is a most unreliable method with high failure rate, it is best to use a contraceptive to avoid risk of pregnancy.
Take care.

Thank you so much Doctor. I will use condom for the first month. Do we need to take care of anything more?

Expert:  Dr. Aarti Vazirani replied 2 Days.

Hello
Yes, please use backup for the first month, till the pill starts taking effect.
Make sure that she takes the pill everyday at the same time, without missing it on any day.

Thank you
