Had cryosurgery a month back due to HPV, can I have protected or unprotected sex?

Resolved question:

I had cryosurgery more than a month ago per mild dysplasia due HPV. My gynecologist told me that after three weeks could have sex. But I have many doubts, as to how to have it, with a condom or without it, my husband can make me oral sex?

Hi,

As the doctor rightly said, you can continue to have intercourse about 2-3 weeks after cryosurgery. The choice of contraceptive depends on if you are trying to get pregnant or not.

If your concern is that your partner might contract HPV infection, then you need not worry as once the cryosurgery has been performed ,the chances of your partner getting it is minimal.

As far as oral cancer is concerned it is a very debatable topic which is still under research. A lot of researches have concluded that there is a definite relation between cervical dysplasia and oral cancer. It mainly depends on the sub type of HPV infected. I would recommend the use barrier protection during oral sex like dental dams or saran wrap or a condom.

I would also recommend you get yourself tested for HPV type to know the future risk for re-infection and the chances of transmission to your partner. It is a simple opd procedure. Type 16 and 18 are more associated with Cancer and re infection.

Its also very important to keep the area around the cryotherapy as dry as possible to prevent infections. Hence do not use swimming pools for another 5 weeks.

Thank you.
