Infected cyst

Resolved question:

I have been having some nasty throat infection last week. It feels very sore around root of mouth and its sides. I had episodes of fever. Also, there are some red spots in my mouth and on the skin of my hands and feet. Now-a-days they are seen gone. Yesterday, I got a pain in my right testicle which got worse after time. I consulted with my GP and he told me that it is a cyst. Now, should I drain off the fluid inside it or will it get cleared up by its own? It is better for me to avoid a surgery right now because I am a football player at the start of season. Thanks for your reply.

Hello. Thank you for your query.

Apart from the testicular pain, the symptoms that you have described are typical of bacterial pharyngitis. It presents with throat infection, difficulty with swallowing, red spots in the pharynx (inflammation). The red spots in the skin are the after effects of the bacterial infection. The most common bacteria involved in this is streptococcus. The probability of rheumatic fever, post infection with streptococcus makes it mandatory to take antibiotic therapy for an extended period of time. It is advised to consult your GP for the lesions to get examined and managed.

The testicular pain you were talking about got nothing to do with the throat infection or fever. A cyst in such an young age is usually uncommon unless you are immunocompromised, as there is probability of Chlamydial and tubercular infection in those type of individuals. It could be from an unidentified injury (as you are a football player) that ultimately lead to the development of cyst. However I would recommend you to visit a surgeon for the cyst to be examined and upon referral to get an ultrasound of the testis done to rule out other possibilities.

Hope this helps.
