Negative pregnancy test followed by a positive at the same time

Resolved question:
My girlfriend took a pregnancy test; first came out negative and the second one came out positive.. What does this mean? Is it a so called chemical pregnancy?

Hello,

Thanks for your consult at DoctorSpring.com.

Normally , urine pregnancy tests are upto 97 % reliable, so errors are rare.
A chemical pregnancy is the opposite scenario to the one you describe - first a positive test, then a negative one, means a silent miscarriage occurred ( chemical pregnancy ).

However, a negative test first and a positive one later could mean that the first test was taken a bit early, and she indeed is pregnant, as the second test indicates.

Could you provide me more dates - that would help me give you a more specific answer -
1. Her last menstrual period.
2. Her normal menstrual cycle length and duration.
3. Dates on which the two tests were taken.

All the best
Looking forward to hearing from you soon.
Take care.

1. The ending of October but it was just spotting and it only lasted 2 days
When it usually lasts 5 days

3. She took both of the test yesterday afternoon..

We tested because do to discomfort in the stomach and a little bit of blood when she urinated a couple of days ago.. She was told from one of her friends those are signs that she is so then we just decided to test..

As you have had two different results in a day ( very improbable ) -
Please take a blood B HCG test.
Also, are you sure you interpreted the strips correctly ?
Another thing - a miscarriage or an ectopic pregnancy ( pregnancy outside the uterus ) might give equivocal urine pregnancy tests.
Please go for a blood B HCG test in conjunction with a pelvic ultrasound.
Take care.
