Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome.

Resolved question:
Hello ! My name is Franchesca and I'm a 20 year old female. I haven't had a regular period in a year and I get all the symptoms of having one but there no real blood flow. Instead I get a thick sticky brown discharge. I never had vaginal sex but my boyfriend and I do mess around but that started two months ago. So what could it be?

Hello,

Thanks for writing to DoctorSpring.com with your health concern.

What you have described is not at all normal, and warrants investigation. It could be hormonal imbalance.

Everyday reasons are anxiety, stress, personal or professional tension, weight gain, travelling, late nights, erratic eating habits, smoking, drinking, etc.
Thyroid hormone abnormalities can cause this.

In women in their twenties and thirties, PCOS ( polycystic ovarian syndrome ) is a leading cause.
This is due to underlying hormonal disturbance, the ovaries get studded with multiple small cysts, and ovulation and menstruation are irregular.
Please schedule a consultation with a gynecologist.

Have a thorough internal check up ( per vaginum and per speculum ) and a complete pelvic transvaginal ultrasound scan.
Also, hormonal tests - FSH, LH, TSH, Prolactin, OGTT, DHEAS, free testosterone.
Please have the abovementioned workup, that will reveal the diagnosis.

Do not neglect such irregular periods for long.
All the best
Take care.
Please feel free to discuss further.
PS - Did you always have regular periods earlier ?

Yes, my periods were always regular. On time, all the time

Then there is all the more reason to have the workup as outlined.
