I have a small right inguinal hernia, 3 cm x 3cm, minimally symptomatic, I just turned 67, am in very good shape (competitive runner), although I've been keeping fit by power walking since I developed this hernia 4 months ago, I'm searching for a surgeon in my area who will repair it with local anastetic and sedation, I have MILD BPH symptoms, my concern is post op urinary retention, isn't it true that with local anastestia the UR rate is VERY low? This concern has me quite stressed as not being ill often and having no prior surgeries, this is new to me, please allay my fears if you would, thank you.

The risk of urinary retention is low in local anaesthesia. But, you should consult an experienced Surgeon for this.
As there is no medical treatment for hernia, surgery is the only option.
Even under Spinal anaesthesia, the urinary retention will be for few hours. I personally prefer doing surgery under Spinal anaesthesia, even in patients above 65years of age.
I have operated on hundreds of hernia without any urinary complaint after surgery.
The relaxation of muscles will not be that good under local anaesthesia.
