Testing for HIV prior to surgery

Resolved question:
I was wondering do hospitals test for Hiv prior to surgery. My wife had her fallopian tube removed and she was wondering if they did a Hiv test prior to surgery because they took her blood.

Hello,

Thank you for choose DoctorSpring.

Yes, most hospitals do an HIV and HbSAg (Hepatitis B) test as a standard protocol. This is because additional protection for the medical staff and sterilisation procedures in general are needed in case of patients with HIV and/or Hepatitis. There are blood born infections and so it is important to take precautions when dealing with hundreds of patients on an yearly basis.

In addition to these tests some baseline blood investigations like Haemoglobin levels, Blood sugar levels etc are also routinely tested pre operatively.

Hope this helps
