Throat pain with swelling on the right side of throat

Resolved question:
I have had a soar throat for two days now. I feel a swollen bulb on the right side of my throat, right at the pharynx opening to the mouth. It is painful to swallow but the is not airway obstruction. Neither are there any fever or other symptoms. Is this worth seeing a doctor for , or should I allow more time for it to run its course? Any helpful over the counter remedies?

Thanks for choosing DoctorSpring.com I understand your concern. Since you already have a sore throat for the past 2 days I will rather recommend you to first start saline gargling if you haven't already started.Since you have no fever or myalgia, it points more towards viral tonsillitis. Normally saline water gargling should be able to help viral tonsilitis. Also try to avoid cold items for a few days till the swelling subsides. Avoid cold water/ice-cream. At times the viral infection if not controlled can lead on to super added bacterial infection after which you will manifest fever and myalgia. So its better to control the infection right now. However if your swelling doesn't resolve in the next couple of days, then you can get your family physician's opinion. You have difficulties in swallowing when your tonsils get enlarged. Some people are prone to tonsillar problems frequently but you haven't mentioned anything as such. If you have any further queries, do get back to us. Regards
