Varicose vein and lumps

Resolved question:

I am an averagely built man of 35 years. I am in a fear of something happening in my body. About 20 years ago, some lumps appeared in my body, when I was just 13 or 14 years old. I am afraid to consult a doctor. Now, I think it is better to consult with a doctor. The first lump appeared at the back of my neck, just below skull as a fatty lump of just an inch or so. It is now hardly felt and creates no problem. Accompanying this, there appeared some lump growths in my wrist, ankles and even on my stomach. When felt by hand, they seem to be of some fat tissue and are not so hard. Now the situation is somewhat serious. I developed varicose vein in my left leg which gets swelled if I stand up for some time. You can understand how frustrated I will be at this. I regret in my decision for not taking prompt medical care. Are that lumps associated with varicose? I am going to consult my GP soon. Can you give any help on this issue?

Hello ,

Thank you for your query.

I can understand how painful it could be to have multiple disorders at a time .Speaking about the lumps, there are certain things that need to be noticed like appearance, size, number, shape, consistency, color, texture etc. So they need to be examined by a physician for the diagnosis to be made. But based on your description, we could narrow down the possibilities to:

1) Multiple lipomas These are benign soft tissue swellings filled with fat. They are painless and movable.

2) Neurofibromatosis-It is a rare, benign hereditary disorder associated with multiple tumors that develop at the end of nerve tissues. It is usually associated with other symptoms like hearing defects etc.

Your description of the lump guides me more towards multiple lipomas but they need to be confirmed by the physician on physical examination. The treatment is simple excision which hardly takes 30 min per lump.

On the other hand, Varicosity is a completely different condition and there is no association with the lumps you describe. Our body pumps the deoxygenated blood back to the heart through veins. These veins have valves to prevent backflow of blood. If these valves fail, then the blood regurgitates back into the veins and there is pooling of blood. This presents as varicose veins in legs and calf.

The varicose veins appear prominent when there is severe strain to the heart like as in exercise, walking for a long distance .So it is advised not to strain your heart and legs. An elastic crepe bandage could be of great help in your case. In extreme cases a surgical repair of veins and their valves is considered.

Hope this helps.
