Chances of getting HIV from punctured wound. PEP treatment?

Resolved question:
Dear Sir/madam. About 3 weeks ago I was fishing on a holiday and I sustained a hook injury ( pieced my hand ). That same hook punctured a young boy in the hand a couple of minutes before me. My question is if the boy happened to be HIV positive, what are the chances of transmission to me, (I don't remember seeing fresh blood on the hook) should I have taken PEP Treatment? The HIV rate in children is low in my country, however my anxiety levels are extreme. Appreciate as much details as possible. Thankyou

Hello,
Thank you for your medical query at DoctorSpring.com
I understand your concern.
There is a very low chance ( not more than 0.5 % ) chance of HIV being spread from such injuries. Moreover, the prevalence is low in your country and you did not notice any blood on the hook. Considering all that, you should not worry. Even if someone is HIV positive, there is not more than 0.5-1 % chance of the infection being spread this way.
Please feel free to discuss further,
Regards.
