Constipation followed by large mucoid stool and diarrhea

Resolved question:
I wrote to you last night and the doctor responded I wanted to ask a follow up question. Could I have gall bladder problems. You mentioned having a biopsy of small intestine. does that makes me think cancer. Main syptoms don/t go to bathroom for a few days. then go a lot and it starts out big and hard with yellowish mucus and then turns to diarhea and cramping. Might just have some diarhea. then when i eat my stomach rumbles and have gas sometimes calms down and somtimes doesn't i have been diagnosed with irritable bower and have had upper gi tested for celiac it was negative said i had some gastrities started taking imeprozole for heartburn colonoscopy was fine. so i am a worrrier and am clining to the fact that hopefully it's not cancer and could be something else what do you think.

Hello again,

Thanks for posting your query.

Your main symptom is altered bowel habits, which is consistent with irritable bowel syndrome.

These symptoms are not due to gallbladder issues. If the gallbladder is involved, the symptom would be severe right upper abdominal pain that may radiate your shoulder blades. Ultrasound scan of the abdomen would confirm it.

I mentioned biopsy of the small intestine. This is done as part of evaluation of defective absorption work-up.

Good to hear that you are negative for celiac. It is unlikely to be cancer as there is no evidence for it .

Hope this helps, please feel free to discuss further as follow-up queries.

so are you saying its unlikely there is cancer in the small intestine but the procedure might reveal an defective absorption problem

Expert:  Dr. Ratnakar Kini replied 3 Days.

Exactly. Cancer is highly unlikely. The procedure might reveal or rule out a defective absorption problem. Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is a common problem, so before proceeding with further evaluation a treatment trial for IBS can be taken. The biopsy need to be considered only after that.

Hope this helps

Hello,

My sincere apologies with the delay in reply due to unforeseen circumstances.

Diarrhea predominant IBS is treated with probiotics, antidiarrheals, antispasmodics and tricyclic antidepressants.

Let me know if I can assist you further. Again my apologies for the delay.
