is it illegal for a doctor to prescribe xanax to someone they never met and who lives in a different state by just mailing a prescription to them?

Hello,
Thank you for your medical query at DoctorSpring.com
When it comes to prescriptions, legally a doctor should not prescribe any medicine without examining the patient. It is more important to follow the rules when it comes to drugs like Xanax, which are anti-anxiety drugs, or anti-depressants.
This is because the patient needs to be explained about its possible side effects, the dosage, and this is based on whether the patient actually needs it.
So, yes, it is not legally right to mail a prescription without meeting the patient.
Regards.

So what can happen to the doctor then? can he be fired?

Hello,
I should rather use the word ethical and not illegal.
It depends on the management though. If they find out, they can take whatever action they think is necessary.
Regards.
