Thank you for your query at DoctorSpring.com.

Dear sir,

I find that there is dysplasia reported in bone marrow aspiration cytology / biopsy and peripheral blood showing atypical cells.

A typical Leukemia (AML) is defined when there are 20% or more of blast cells. However in your case, there are 8% blast cells with dysplasia which means there are some unusual features in cells which point towards pre-cancer status / simply to say, cancer in evolution.

However, considering the age and sex, I would suggest you to do a complete IPT study and genetic study which probably would have been already done at your hospital. They may help to confirm the diagnosis. There are certain AML which does not require blast count if there are proven genetic abnormalities pointing towards cancer.

Kind request to send the entire reports of the IPT and genetic study if done, for better correlation and understanding.

Kind regards.

Patient replied :

Sir, Let me know what is IPT Study. Hospital is doing now Flow Cytometry for confirmation. Is IPT and Flow Cytometry are same?. So at present not confirmed that she is having cancer?

Hello, ,
IPT and flow are the same.. Does she have any other previous blood reports to have a background idea of the past ??
Flow cytometry gives the technical details of the cells, so it is rather more of an evidence to know the nature of the cell. Please wait until we get the reports. Have you given samples for genetic and molecular studies ?
Please revert back.

Patient replied :

Sir,
Not given the samples for genetic & molecular studies. Kindly brief what the test indicates

Expert:  Dr. Prasad Eswaran replied 2 Days.

There are tests to find out the genetic and molecular reasons which were the cause of cancer. They assess the DNA changes and are also helpful in choosing drugs in certain types of diseases. They are used as clinical prognosticators for studying and evaluating the features in AML.
These tests are costly and I am not sure if they are available in your institute. However, you can always discuss with your Oncologist and find out how to proceed further. Please understand that he is the best person for clinical judgement as he has personally examined the patient and advises on management.
Kind regards,

Attached here the Report of Flow Cytometry. Kindly Review it and let me know.

The report clearly defines AML with monocytic differenntiation. This is AML which needs intensive chemotherapy.
You can discuss with your oncologists regarding further management.
