Effect of DIFLUCAN for yeast infection In pregnancy.

Resolved question:
I just found out that I am pregnant yesterday. Probably only a few weeks or so. I took an early result pregnancy test on August 12th and it was negative. On August 21st I began taking 200mg per day for 7 days of Diflucan for yeast on my face and chest. I am now worried because this medication is not intended for use in pregnant women. Do you feel that I need to worry about any harm to my child? I read online that it is a category D for taking high doses of 400mg-800mg per day for most or all of the first trimester, but I still cant help but worry. Could any of this medication been passed to the embryo? Thank you

Hello
Thanks for writing to us with your health concern.
Generally 150mg single dose is considered safe in between.
Long term usage of high dose Diflucan is associated with birth defects, as you rightly surmised, this is considered Category D.
200 mg is a pretty low dose, and 7 days is not long term either.
I would say you do not have much cause for concern.
This is just the very beginning of the embryo formation, and I would say that you should relax.
Please take regular 5 mg per day folic acid supplements, and also get regular scans and tests done for genetic screening at the appropriate times.
Wish you luck.
All the best.
Please feel free to discuss further.

Thanks for the reply. So your saying that it is pretty unlikely that any harm could have been done? Can much be passed to an embryo so early in pregnancy? At the time I started taking the Diflucan, It was probably only a week since implantation occurred. This is my 2nd pregnancy and I worried like crazy about everything in my first pregnancy too, I've been taking prenatal vitamins that contain folic acid and dha everyday since my last pregnancy 4 years old patientago.

As I said, chances of anything going wrong with the embryo are minimal.
Please do not worry about it.
I think you should be fine.
