Irritation, inflammation in eye due to CLOTRIMAZOLE.

Resolved question:
Got some Clotrimazole in my eye. Was using 2% CLotrimazole cream for a fungal infection. Had it on my fingers, and I forgot and rubbed my left eye. I ran to the bathroom and applied Visine to wash it out (it was the only thing sterile I had to wash it with). This happened last Tuesday evening. Now, a week later, I have serious pain in the back of this eye, although it is not unusually red and my vision has not been affected thus far. There is mild pain when I press on the left eye, not so with the unaffected right eye.

I believe some of the Clotrimazole got into my optic nerves and caused irritation/inflammation (optic neuritis?).

I have been taking an OTC NSAID - 200mg Ibuprofen gelcaps, and it does help with the pain, sometimes wiping out the eye pain. Shall I continue to take this, and for how long? Is this hopefully a temporary condition that will go away by itself, or do I need to see a doctor?

Hello,
Thank you for your query.
Clotrimazole going into the eye will cause mild irritation and redness of eye.
It would not go and affect optic nerve.
If there is so much eye pain, you should get your eyes checked by an ophthalmologist.
You can use Ibuprofen for a week, but it is better to get an ophthalmology check-up.
Regards.

Well I have also had a pain in left shoulder and neck. When I turn my head to the right, left side of neck hurts. I hear a pop or crack in my neck. Left side of neck and back of neck is sore to the touch. Could be related to the left eye "optic nerve" pain? Could pinched nerve cause this type of pain in my left eye?

Hello,
Pinched nerve does not cause any pain in the eye.
The pain could be because if optic nerve involvement but that is mostly due to viral infections.

Thank you, doctor.

My left temple is painful to the touch. My left eye socket is also very tender and sore. There is inflammation there. Don't know what could be causing it. I think it may be related to the optic pain. Also have glare in my vision and some haziness.

This definitely needs to be examined by an ophthalmologist.
It could be optic neuritis, due to a viral infection.
Regards.

No, you can't get neuritis like that.
