Is BETAVERT safe to take with SSHL, hearing loss?

Resolved question:
I am having giddiness and met a general physician who diagnosed it as "Vertigo" and prescribed Betavert 16. However, I have a history of SSHL and lost hearing in my right ear about 3 years old patientago, at the time I was told this is Idiopathic. I want to know if it is safe for me to take this medication.

Hello,
Thank you for posting your query at DoctorSpring.com
You are suffering from giddiness. you have right sided hearing loss also. Betavert is very safe drug.
it will not affect hearing so you can start this.

First we need to find cause of giddiness or vertigo. Do you have spinning sensation or unsteadiness. Is
it continuous or episodic. Any association with change of position. Any other associated symptoms?
Once you reply, I will get back to you.

hope this helps
best regards

Thanks for your response doctor. I have Sensori Neural Hearing Loss, and I lost my hearing in the right ear around 2013, which was a very sudden attack. Doctors had mentioned this happened due to no blood supply and nerve failure in the inner ear. My left ear is normal and I want to protect that ear and the hearing. To answer your question, this giddiness and spinning sensation happened after a very long time. I feel my head is spinning and feel giddy especially if I am lying down or even if I am looking down or bending down to pick something, also if I am shifting sides while sleeping. It has reduced a bit, and to my knowledge it is not continuous or periodic. This happened all of a sudden.
In detail:
1. The giddiness started on 28th of Aug (Friday) and the next two days it was extreme and I was feeling head spins throughout the day, and felt like vomiting but didn't throw up.
2. The nausea and giddiness was more during the evening and night, especially when I am lying on the bed.
3. On Monday, the 31st of Aug I was able to walk and went to the doctor (MD, General Physician) who diagnosed me and thought it could be because of stress, low BP, or Vertigo and gave the following medicines: Betavert 16mg and Nucoxia.
4. This is the first time after my SNHL that I have experienced such severe giddiness and head spinning that I could not walk or get up from the bed, it was uncomfortable in any kind of movement. I feel bit better now but there is a kind of weakness I feel within. The recent blood test report shows:
Hb count: 8.5
PCV: 30.1
Should I continue taking the medicines prescribed: Betavert 16mg and Nucoxia? I am consulting you because I don't want any damage to my left ear. Also, is there any possibility of improving my hearing loss? Please advise. Thanks, Sutapa

Hello,

I can understand you had sudden sensorineural hearing loss on right side. Betavert will not affect hearing.

Your giddiness is due to BPPV, benign paoxismal positional vertigo. You need to see local ENT specialist so he can do epley menovuer excercise for same.

This will cure your giddiness

Please let me know if I can help you further
Hope this helps.

Thanks doctor.
I will visit a local ENT and tell him to show me the epley menovuer exercises.
In the meantime, can you provide some effective tips to protect my left ear hearing?
Also, I would like to know if I can do a cleaning of my ears from a good ENT. Because I feel a lot of congestion in both my ears. Few months ago an ENT specialist refused to clean my ears as she was concerned about the hearing loss and didn't want to take a chance with my left ear by cleaning it.
Is it safe to do it?
Please advise.

Sutapa

Hello,

Nothing special for protection of left side hearing. Just avoid noise trauma, ototoxic medicine.( whenever you see a doctor ask him to write medicine which does not affect hearing).

Ear cleaning doesnot harm if it is done properly. We do it under microscopic examination even for small children

At present you need epleys menovuer only.

Hope this helps

So doctor,
Should I be doing Epley Maneuver for the right side? (right ear = affected ear+hearing loss, left ear = normal hearing).
Also, I will follow the instructions you mentioned and visit ENT for the demonstration.

Sutapa
