Is co-codamol an addictive drug? How long can it be used safely?

Resolved question:

Hi doctor, I am concerned about Co-codamol medication my doctor prescribed for me. It was for pain relief in my lower spine and hips. The tablets contain 8mg codine and 500mg paracetamol. I heard that this drug is addictive to some extent. I take two tablets before going to bed every day and find sleeping very good after taking this. Please help.

Thanks for your question. Co-codamol is a highly addictive drug and is not advised to take for a long. It can cause restlessness and irritation feeling when you are to stop using them. So, it is not advised to take it for more than three days at a stretch to avoid addiction and related side effects. Anyway, your doctor knows you better and can decide how long you may use it for the treatment of your illness. It is better to follow his directions strictly.
