Laryngomalacia

Resolved question:
Our two month old child has laryngomalcia. She's been vomiting after every meal for the past week. We have been giving her pedialyte with premium Enfamil newborn powder and she still vomits all of it up. Now she has stopped breathing on many different occasions. My wife and I are not sure what to do at this point. Please help

Dear Parent,

Thank you for your consult at DoctorSpring.com.

Your concerns are valid. The underlying laryngomalacia generally resolves by itself (12-18 months) and does not pose any major problems in most children (mild variant). In a small group of children (10%), it is moderate to severe and can be associated with regurgitation symptoms or apnea or other serious symptoms.

Your description of your child's symptoms could be due to underlying GASTR-ESOPHAGEAL REFLUX disease, that can be associated with moderate-severe laryngomalacia. My advice would include:
1. Ensure frequent small volume feeds
2. Thickening of feeds may help
3. Positioning the child upright after feeding and also 'burping' the child after every feed may help.

If the symptoms do not respond to these supportive measures, it would be better to personally consult a ENT specialist, so that further evaluation and management can be planned. Chronic vomiting can lead to poor weight gain and other problems and hence, cannot be taken lightly. In a small proportion of children, surgical correction may be required of symptoms are refractory to medical therapy.

Wishing your child a speedy recovery. Please feel free to get back with further queries.
Take care
Regards
