Near term pregnant and bright red blood from rectum

Resolved question:
I am pregnant with a due date of December 19th (this Thursday). I have had a healthy pregnancy with no problems. Blood pressure has been fine. NSTs have been fine. Baby is moving like she normally does. I've gained about 26 pounds during the pregnancy. My doctor checked me on Wednesday and my cervix was closed and thick. I have not had any contractions or anything out of the ordinary. However, I have bright red blood coming from my rectum. I asked my mom about it and she said it is probably caused by a hemorrhoid. But I am not having any pain in my rectum at all. What should I do? What could cause bright red blood to be in the toilet after having a BM?

Hello
Thanks for writing to us with your health concern.
Bright red blood after a BM could be due to the following possibilities -
1. Anal fissure - this is slight abrasion of the anal mucosa, typically leading to a reddish streak on the toilet seat after passing motions.
2. Haemorrhoids - these need not always be painful, external haemorrhoids often can be painless
3. Anal fistula .
The exact cause would be known only after examining you locally.
PLease get that done, meanwhile address constipation if that is an issue.
Taking mild laxatives is also fine.
ALso, take warm Sitz baths 4 - 5 times a day.
Anal fissue will respond to Local Lidocaine jelly.
Haemorrhoids need proper treatment as per the type.
PLease visit your doctor for a local examination.
Do not worry, as these are minor conditions , which are easily treatable.
All the best.
Please feel free to ask for further clarifications.
