Dear Doctor,
I had an STD shot a few years back which was very painful and hot. I want to become pregnant but still have warts on both the buttocks sides very near to the vagina. I am afraid if thesegenital warts indicate an STD which was cured previously.

Thanks for your question and concern. The genital warts are actually caused by a virus named HPV which do not produces symptoms most of the times due to which it is difficult to predict that you are having the warts in your genital areas and that is why the infection of such warts are lifelong. The virus causing HPV spreads through the sexual contact from one skin to the other and not only by having intercourse with your partner. Hence the total protection is not guaranteed by the usage of the condoms because the virus causing HPV can be present on the skin area that the condom does not cover. If you are planning for pregnancy then I would recommend you to undergo surgery if the virus has spread widely and the genital warts have stopped responding to the medical treatment. But let me also tell you that in almost 50% of the cases where people have HPV virus and go for surgery as a medium of treatment, the warts do come back again even after the treatment through surgery. And to add to your knowledge, the HPV virus can also be transmitted from one person to another even when you cannot see the warts present on that area. So it is not necessary that if the warts are gone for a while then there are no chances of coming back of the warts. All you need to do is keep getting the tests done so that you will come to know whenever you are having the genital warts even if they are not visible to you. Best wishes.
