Sudden onset ear pain

Resolved question:
I had a sudden onset of ear pain that started on 11/20 in which I went to a walk in for. The dr. then told me it was red in my ear, and that I do look like I have an ear infection. She gave me Amox-Clav 875mg and ear drops: Neo/Poly/HC 1% Otic Solin 10ML Blue 4 drops 3 times a day.... Today I woke up with a sore jaw, light headache and a feeling that my ear was "full." When I put the drops in, there is little to not drainage at all, and the area around the bottom of my ear is sore and painful. Under my jaw, closest to my ear it is sore as well and does feel a bit swollen. I get painful jolts every once and a while but mostly a constant dull pain, ringing in my ear, feels like it's full of fluid and is making me exhausted. When I did put a bit of pressure on it, a light pink fluid was on my Kleenex. I am currently not running a fever, do not feel nauseous and my headache is not severe. I called the Dr. I saw in the clinic, who was not there and was routed to a colleague of hers. He shared that since I haven't improved overnight that really concerned him. Should I experience such great healing overnight, what is the fluid and how long does it last? Should I go to the ER and get a CT scan since my jaw is sore? His expectations seemed a bit far fetched for overnight. Please advise, it has me very worried.

Hello,

Thank you your consult at DoctorSpring.com. I can understand your problem, and will try to help you the best possible.

Let me explain the disease first ->

Your symptoms are;
Ear pain and pain around right ear mainly below it, just behind jaw
Ear discharge

So you are having infection of ear, for which you are given correct medication. It is troubling you but it is not a serious condition. All ear infections take some time to improve so you need not to worry about it. You can revisit you ENT consultant once she is available.

If you have severe pain then you can go to ER, but you don’t require CT.
You are given correct antibiotic (amoxy-clav) and ear drops; you can continue same for total 5 days.

Ear fullness and blocking sensation is very common during ear infection it may last for up to weeks, we can start decongestant medication for same including Tab.Levocetrizine 5 mg once daily for 15 days.

For pain and swelling we can start Tab. Paracetamol 1gm three times daily after food.(or any other analgesic you are using regularly).

Summary of treatment:
• To Continue same treatment.
• To add - Tab.Levocetrizine 5 mg once daily for 15 days.
• To add – analgesic medicine for pain
• To review ENT consultant for examination

Hope this helps. Feel free to ask if you have any further queries.

Thank you.
Regards
