Transmission of HPV causing cervical cancer and herpes

Resolved question:

Hi doctor, my girlfriend has HPV that causes cervical cancer. I just wanted to know that if I use protection like condom then will I be at risk of carrying the HPV. Also, since HPV causes genital warts too, does genital warts falls in std list?

Thank you for your question. You told that your girlfriend carries HPV which causes cervical cancer. I must tell you that HPV can cause 40 types of sexually transmitted diseases and hence is very harmful. Since, your girl friend has the risk of cervical cancer; in this case if you have sex with her without using any kind of protection then there is less possibility of you getting affected by genital warts which again is another dangerous sexually transmitted disease. However, in this case you might be at risk of cervical cancer for sure. Most of the HPVs cause either genital warts or cervical cancer and hence your concern is valid. Hence, I would suggests you that if you has sex with your girlfriend off late then you should get yourself tested as soon as possible to minimize the risk of you getting affected with either genital warts of cervical cancer. Use of condom as you said will certainly lower the risk of carrying such infections.

Moving onto the next question of yours; genital warts does fall into the std list. As mentioned it is one of the most commonly found sexually transmitted disease in most of the western countries spread due to the sexually transmitted infection HPV. Having sex vaginal, anal or oral with a person carrying this virus will pass on the virus to you also in case you don’t use protection. With protection also like condom you are not 100% on the safer side. I hope I was able to clear your doubts. Take care.
