Treatment for lot of gas, burping and farting.

Resolved question:
I have been having a lot of gas lately with burping and farting and I do not know why. I have been eating very plain food, boiled potatoes, plain rice, plain toast, because I went a few days without eating due to lack of appetite. Where is this gas coming from? What can I do to get rid of it?

Hello. Thank you for posting your query at Doctorspring.com
I understand your concern.
Excessive burping and flatulence can indicate gastro-oesophageal refulx disease. ( GERD ). Flatulence is a normal body process, however when there is excessive amounts of undigested carbohydrates, then it can lead to increased flatulence. Did you have any problems with lactose intolerance in your childhood? Is this the first time you have been experiencing such problems? Do you drink/smoke? If yes, then what is the frequency?
At present, your digestion doesn't seem to be proper. Is there any change in your stool consistency? Is there any associated abdominal cramps? Kindly reply back with answers to all these questions to help me guide you further.
For the next few days, please avoid any kind of dairy products, cabbage, broccoli, beans, cereals for the next few days. Also with age our lower abdominal muscles get weaker, so even minute formation of gases can lead to flatulence. I will also advise you to start walking around 30-45 minutes per day. It will help in your digestion process. Along with that take the following medicines :-
1) Tab. Pan 40 one tablet daily before breakfast for the next 2 weeks
2) Syp. Carbozyme ( or any such equivalent enzyme/local brand that is available ), 2 teaspoons twice daily after meals.
3) Syp. Sucralfate 2 tea spoons twice daily, if there is associated hyperacidity.
Please get back to me with further details,
Regards

Did you have any problems with lactose intolerance in your childhood? I honestley dont remember, but I have been useing Lactaid milk just in case.
Is this the first time you have been experiencing such problems? yes, to this extent
Do you drink/smoke? If yes, then what is the frequency? no At present, your digestion doesn't seem to be proper. Is there any change in your stool consistency? Yesterday I got a heavy lower stomach cramps and then a lot of stool came out that was mucusy. This was after I did not have an appitite for 2 days but I forced myself to eat blan foods (as stated above).
Is there any associated abdominal cramps? As stated above there was a heavy lower stomach cramps that one time.

I am concerned that there is an issue with regards to my intestines, like an infection or something. Should I be concerned or should I just wait it out?

Hello. Thank you for writing to us again.
The mucus in the stool, associated with lower abdominal cramps points towards an intestinal infection. I will suggest if it is possible for you, can you get a STOOL ROUTINE examination done ( For ova, cysts, parasites )?
If it is not possible for you, then you can take the following which is very effective in treating any kind of intestinal parasite :
1) Tab. Mebendazole 150 mg one tablet at bed time, followed by one more tablet after 3 days.
2 doses will successfully cure any infection that is present.
We can rule out bacterial infection since you don't have diarrhea and also there is no fever. You can take Tab. Pan 40 and Syp. Suralfate for the next few days, and your symptoms will get better.
Also one more thing that i forgot to ask you, do you have diabetes? I am asking this because there is amedicine that is prescribed to diabetics called Voglibose/Acarbose, these people are very prone to developing excessive flatulence as a side effect of using the medicine.
There are no side effects of Mebendazole, which i asked you to take, and this will take care of any infection, if it is present. The only conclusive way to find that out is through stool examination.
Hope this is helpful,
Regards

How do I get the Mebendazole to take? Is it over the counter?
As for your last question, no I do not have diabetes. I am currently not takeing any medicines except benedryl and advil for my alergies.

Hello,
Thank you for writing to us again.
Tab. Pan 40, Syp Sucralfate and Tab. Mebendazole, that i precribed for you are all OTC drugs. You do not need any prescription for them. Tab Pan 40 will reduce the burping, Syp. Sucralfate will reduce any regurgitation, and will coat the layer of the stomach, so that it is not exposed to any acidity ( happens during indigestion and hence the precaution ) and Mebendazole will be helpful in treating the worm infection.
If you do manage to get the stool examination done, then you can upload the reports in your next follow up. Also if possible get an LFT ( Liver Function Test ) done and upload the reports.
If your symptoms don't subside in the next couple of days, please get back to us and we will assist you further.
Take care sir,
Regards

I am sorry to bother you but I can not locate where I can buy the Mebendazole over the counter. I live in Bridgeport, CT. Is there a way you can tell me where I can buy it?

Expert:  Dr. Jaydeep Tripathy replied 1 Day.

Hello. Thank you for writing to us again.
I did some online research and I came up with an alternative. You can take Tab. Albendazole 400 mg, just one dose is enough unlike Mebendazole, it is an OTC, is easily available and should be available with your local pharmacist.
In case albendazole is not available, i will request you to consult your GP, to give you a prescription. Mebendazole is actually a better drug, however it is not available easily as an OTC, that's what i understood from my research online.
Feel free to discuss further,
Regards
