Treatment for SEASONAL ALLERGY with cough and chest pain.

Resolved question:
Hi,

Thanks for your services!

I have my younger brother who is having some strange type of season allergy. In this allergy thing he feels Irritation (Esp In The Throat) due to cough he feels like something is stuck'ed in his throat but its all due to cough. Along with this he starts mild coughing in the starting of this allergy, coughing is sometimes with cough and sometimes dry it's just coughing in the changing season. Then in between the season his coughing problem gets more drastic and makes him to cough more and more and due to that he also feels pain in chest while coughing continuously (not so continuously).

He has the same problem since years old patientand we tried many doctors and medicines but nothing works on him, just few months back i guess some homeopathy medicine worked but then the doctor got shifted in some other place so we have no contact with him now.

Now, please suggest what we need to give him :

We already tried :
1. Make him drink hot water.
2. Given him cough syrups but no luck.

He is also having issues with Deo's, Perfumes, Room Fresheners! He just can't resist them! But otherwise he is a perfect heathy person having no issues while doing anything. His age is 19 years. Please suggest what do we need to do to cure this season allergy. Also let me mention, that this allergy problem is seasonal only, it works only in changing season otherwise he is always healthy throughout.

Overall, It's just he is having issues with cough and feeling like his throat is sore.

Kind Regards
Bharat

Hello.
Thank you for your query at DoctorSpring.com
I understand your concern.
Your brother is suffering from seasonal allergies. Some people are very prone to allergies and they have to be extremely careful. It is important to understand what exactly triggers this allergy. A lot of people have this misconception that seasonal allergy means these symptoms occur due to a drop in temperature but it is not that. For example, some people get allergies during rainy season, and that is due to increase in the number of pollens outside. So if there is a possible trigger source, like in summer season there is more dust, it has to be identified and a mask becomes extremely important for him while he is going out.
Before prescribing any treatment i need to know what he has already tried till now. Sadly apart from the anti histaminics/ steroids ( in very severe allergies ), there are no other alternatives available for such allergies. But yes Syp. Ascoril 2 teaspoons twice daily after food, does work well when there is cough due to seasonal allergy. Please mention the name of the anti allergic drugs that has already been tried on him. The throat is getting sore because of the immediate mucus accumulation that happens, thanks to an allergy attack.
Hope this was helpful,
Regards.

Hi,
Thanks for replying.
My brother had used nearly all anti allergic medicines like cetirizine. He also tried Ascoril but it only reliefed temporarily. We also tried Homeopathy, Ayurveda but everything works on temporary basis. It's just he gets this allergy when the season starts (any season) and when the season ends or maybe sometimes in middle of the season like middle of summer when dust particles flows in temperature of 45 Degree. I just need a permanent solution for him so that he don't face issues in future. Currently the coughing just started that's why i immidiatedly thought to consult a doctor so that we can stop this at initial stage.
Let me know if anything else is needed.

Hello.
I totally understand what your brother is going through.
Unfortunately as i told you in my earlier mail too, apart from anti histamines or in severe cases steroids no other treatment is availbale for recurrent allergies.
I will advise you to give him one of the two medicines : ( slightly higher dose anti-histaminic )
1) Tab. Claritin 10 mg once daily at bed time, for 7 days.
OR
2) Tab. Allegra 180 mg once daily at bed time for 7 days.
These are the next best alternative to levocetrizine that is commonly given.
For his cough you can give Syrup. codeine 2 teaspoons twice daily since ascoril did not really help.
If this is also not successful, then there is another method whose success still has not been proved that widely. It is immunotherapy. But we will cross that bridge if it is required.
Kindly give the medicines as i told you and let me know in 3-4 days if his symptoms are subsiding.
Regards.
