Unbearable neck pain

Resolved question:

Dear doctor,

I am a 25 years old female, with pain in my neck, chest and shoulders. This is not my first consultation with a doctor. I have consulted with 7 doctors before and they all say that my blood tests show that I am normal. Also I have done the tests liver, full blood count, ESR, body chemistry, CRP etc., which turned out to be normal. For confirmation, these tests were repeated 5 times within this September. I underwent some physical examinations and also taken an X-ray. They say that I am quite healthy and fine. But actually I don't feel so. I roamed over internet and found that the symptoms I have are that of lymphoma. Are my doctors hiding it from me? Please help me at the earliest.

Hello,

Thank you for posting your query here.

I am sorry for your present condition and shall try to make a few possibilities regarding the diagnosis. Repeated attacks of chest pain, especially burning type and during the nights are suggestive of esophageal pathology. It could be a simple Gastro esophageal reflux. Esophageal reflux is a condition where the lower esophageal sphincter becomes lax and the food from the stomach regurgitates back into the esophagus. This irritates the lining of the gut tube and thus presents as burning chest pain. If you are an alcoholic you have more chances of getting this. It can be controlled by the following measures.

1)Avoid spicy foods.

2)Avoid late night dinners

3)Make sure you give some time for the food to get settled before going to bed.

4)Eat regularly at the same time.

5)Try to cut down alcohol intake  (If you are an alcoholic)

6)If problem persists consult a physician for further management (like for antacids and proton pump inhibitors)

Coming to your neck pain, it could be due to a referred pain from the chest. Some of the pain carrying nerves innervating the chest also innervate the back and the neck during the development and hence any pain in the chest is referred to the neck or the back and vice versa. Or it could be due to the stretching of nerve fibers due to repeated pressure on the cervical vertebrae from where these nerve arise. It is advised to try some exercises at home and avoid sitting in front of computer or TV for longer duration .Consult a physician if your problem persist.

Hope this helps.
