prostate problems

Resolved Question:

Am I affected with some prostate problems?

I am in a frustration and doubt whether I have some prostate problems or cancer related to it. Now, let me explain my case.

I feel like urinating frequently along with severe back pain at times. I underwent some tests to find if anything is wrong with urine. In tests, it turned out to be normal without any blood content. In the first test, there was no evidence of blood but low level of STI. In the second, it was inconclusive. Now it has been sent foe detailed analysis to find if anything is wrong with prostate. Now my frequent urination is almost under control after taking cranberry juice. I used to walk and exercise properly. Now I am 53 years old. My question is whether this is some prostate enlargement or some cancer? I have did this test about 5-6 years ago, without any evidence of infection.

Hello ,

Let me discuss about the prostate cancer and the symptoms.
Prostate cancer is the 2nd most common cancer in the USA. Also it the sixth leading cause of cancer related deaths among men worldwide. It is common in men over fifty. Factors like geneticsand diet, have been implicated in the development of prostate cancer.A recent study shows that more than 80% of men would develop prostate cancer by the age of 80.

In general, initial stages of this cancer cause no symptoms. Sometimes the symptoms look similar to those of diseases such as benign prostatic hyperplasia. These include frequent urination, increased urination at night (nocturia), difficulty initiating and maintaining a stable stream of urine, blood in the urine (hematuria), and painful urination(dysuria) etc. About 1/3 of patients diagnosed with prostate cancer have one or more such symptoms, while 2/3rds have no symptoms.
Coming to the symptoms you have describe, it guides us to Urinary Tract Infection rather than Prostate problem. The regression of symptoms with cranberry juice would add to our diagnosis. It could have been a benign prostatic
Hypertrophy in the absence of infection. It is recommended to do the following:

1) Drink lot of water in the day time and less when going to bed.

2) Make an appointment for Prostate cancer screening which include
a. Digital Rectal examination
b. Levels of Prostate specific antigen.

3) Consult a physician for a check up and get an Ultrasound done to add strength to the diagnosis.

Hope this helps.
