Varicella and Rubella antibodies dropping in pregnancy and fetal risk

Resolved question:
I am pregnant. I did two immunology tests. The first was done on 31/07/2013 and the varicella igg was 2.79 and varicella igm was 2.3. The rubella igg was 226 and igm was 1.62. I repeated the results on 05/08/2013 and the varicella igg was 2.45 and igm 0.3. The rubella igg was 216 and igm 1.32. My doctor says that there is a 10% chance that the baby is infected and I should consider the option of abortion. I dont know what to do. Are there any more tests I can do. I havent been infected with measles or chicken pox except when I was little and I havent been sick in a while so I dont understand what is going on.

Thank you. Before considering an abortion, is there a chance this could be a false negative ? I am now almost 6.5 weeks. Last test was done on the 05/08. What are the chances of the baby being sick? What other tests can I do at this point as amniocentesis is done at a much later stage as far as I know and its very worrying not knowing

Hello again,

If rubella is contracted in the first trimester, then there is upto 90 % chance that the baby will be affected. Rubella can cause miscarriage, stillbirths and birth defects such as hearing loss, brain damage, heart defects, congenital cataracts etc.

CVS can be done much earlier than amniocentesis.
Please consult a Genetic Counsellor at the earliest, that is my sincere advice.
A genetic counsellor would provide you with reliable statistics, the various possibilities, as well as the next investigations to be carried out.

Please feel free to discuss further. Take care.
