Why do I get stabbing pain in my vagina?

Resolved question:
I have been having stabbing pain in my vagina on and off for about a year. It usually lasts for a little while, and then just goes away. But in the last week it has been almost crippling and almost all the time. I am not pregnant, which is all the info I can find on the internet. I realize I should go to the doctor, but I am hoping it can wait. Is there anything you can suggest I research? Thanks.
