Can SPIRONOLACTONE treat ASCITIS, LIVER FAILURE?

my dad was in the hospital 6 months ago they knew of ascities and liver failure they forgot to diagnose it and now they are letting me know about it what type of medication should they be giving him so i know its the right one. do you think anything is damaged in his body for 6 months now they gave him spirolacthine water pills. should i take my dad to a specialist
