Cervical cancer and HPV.

Resolved question:

Hello doctor, I read that genital warts can lead to cervical cancer. Is it right? I also read about a vaccine available for curing HPV. I had genital warts after getting a HPV infection, and they had gone away by their own, without treatments. Now, is there any chance that I can get cervical cancer or related issues? On a test conducted, my HPV result was turned negative. But is there any connection with HPV result and chance of cancer? But I haven’t performed the test again in last three years as my insurance lapsed. Please help.

Thanks for the question. As you may know, Human Papilloma Virus is the strain of virus group which causes warts and cervical cancer. Among these, some causes warts and some other viruses cause cervical cancer. There are about 70 different types of HPV infections. Of these, it is unusual to get warts and cervical cancer at the same time, from a single type of infection. So, it is unlikely that you might get cervical cancer. Anyway it is better to follow up the pap smear test again, once in a year to rule out a possibility. Your doctor can help in this somewhat more. Hope my answer helps. Best wishes.
