Resolved question:
My dad has had a bad cold for over a week Coughing chest congestion sore throat. Today I found a cup he had been using when working out and it had black mold in it on the bottom and running up the sides. He didnt know this until I told him today. When he went to see the doctor before they gave him steroids an inhaler cough syrup and antibiotics. He is saying he is feeling better but he is still coughing and he still has chest congestion. What should I do?

Hello,

Thank you for asking your query at DoctorSpring.

Sorry for the delay in reply as was waiting for our Infectious Disease Specialists opinion regarding in this consult.

Molds are fungi (including black mold) and they are universally found in the environment. Humans will be exposed to it many times in their life cycle and thankfully our immunity will take care of it. I assume your Dad has no major medical illness (like Post chemotherapy for cancer / Sever Diabetes / HIV-AIDS). In that case there is NO reason to worry. It is unlikely that he was infected / accumulated any toxins.

If the symptoms persists he might require an antibiotic. If by any chance the response is poor to medications and/or there are new usual symptoms then a black mold exposure can be considered. (although the probability is very less)

Hope this helps
