Chronic recurrent ear infections

Resolved question:
I have had ear infections since birth and have had ear tubes at least 21 times in my life, I have had sinus surgery to reconstruct poor drainage that has lead to the constant ear troubles three times. Most often I get such terrible ear infections that has caused hearing loss.I have been without ear troubles for two years since my last surgery and have developed a sever bacterial ear infection. I went to E.R. and the Dr. put me on Keflex 500mg four times a day in which helped for only two days. I now have pus drainage from my ear and a severe cough that starts with a tickle in my throat, I feel a lump in my throat with my toung that feels like a tonsil that has already been removed.I am so sick now and the Medication is not working at all.I recently within the last two years had MERSA in both lungs and I wonder if the ear infection could be staph.I am a 51 year old woman. please advise...

Hello,

Thank you your consult at DoctorSpring.com.

Your are suffering from recurrent ear infection, you had multiple ear surgeries including grommet (ear tube) insertion and sinus surgeries and tonsillectomy surgery.

Now again you have ear infection( ear discharge) and throat infection (severe cough with feeling of lump in throat).
For your ear infection I would recommend starting Ciprofloxacin ear drops 3 drops three times daily for 5 days.(Ear infections are usually caused by pseudomonas not MRSA and cipro is best for same).
For throat infection I would recommend discussing the following medication under with your local doctor( this will help in ear infection also) -

Amoxicillin 500 mg three times daily for 5 days.
Tab.Levocetrizine 5 mg once daily for 5 days.
You can do gargle with warm saline or disprin
You can take analgesic including Paracetamol 1 gm as and when required if you have any throat pain.
We can add cough suppressant like dextromethorphan or codeine phosphate cough syrup

Summary of recommended treatment advised under the care of your Doctor -
Ciprofloxacin ear drops 3 drops three times daily for 5 days
Amoxicillin 500 mg three times daily for 5 days.
Tab.Levocetrizine 5 mg once daily for 5 days.
dextromethorphan or codeine phosphate cough syrup

Hope this helps. Please feel free to ask any further queries.

Thank you.
