Hello, Thank you for asking your query at DoctorSpring.

From your symptoms of pain in ankle and swollen ankle points to sprain in ankle.

Ankle is the region where the ankle bones and the bone of leg meet. This joint performs upward, lower and lateral movements. You could have developed a twist in your leg leading to sprain of ankle. Sprain of uncle mainly occurs due to ligament tear. Ankle joint is made of bones, cartilage and ligaments. Pain here would occur due to fracture of bone, but if there was a fracture yu could not have even moved or walked. Seeing your age its highly impossible you could have a arthritis either.

I suggest you take ibuprofen for pain and inflammation. Tylenol will help if you have too much of pain but it wouldn't bring down your inflammation. Apply warm pad on your swollen ankle, this will make you feel better. You need to apply a cast or tight bandage for 3 weeks, this will give immobility and stability to your ankle. After you buy the bandage, read the instructions as to how to apply the bandage.

This will definitely help you. If it doesn't then visit a orthopaedician, he will suggest you to go for a X.Ray lateral of ankle.

Hope this helps. Please feel free to ask follow-up questions
