Exposed to Naegleria fowleri and dying from PAM

Resolved question:
My wife is worried about the possibility of having been exposed to Naegleria fowleri and dying from PAM. She used half a neti pot before realizing she made the mistake of using tap water in it. We live in northern NJ. She is very anxious about this. Is she going to be ok?

Hello,

Thank you for asking your query at DoctorSpring.

Even though there are a number of Naegleria fowleri - Primary Amebic Meningoencephalitis (PAM) stories on the media, you should make your wife realise this is a extremely rare disease. Thousands of people use neti pot and tap water daily without contracting the disease.

And most importantly PAM is not yet reported in New Jersey. Please see this CDC Data - http://www.cdc.gov/parasites/naegleria/state-map.html.
Naegleria fowleri bacteria is not found in your region. Incase if there is any symptoms get in touch with your Doctor insted of being anxious.

Hope this helps
Thank you
