have extremely dry mouth and frequent urination since I am taking Diovan.

Resolved question:

I have been taking Atenolol 50mg and Amlodipinr 10 mg for about 2 years. I was also taking Lisinopril 40 mg until aboy 6 weeks ago. I was experiencing a chocking cough so my doctor switched me to diovan 320 mg. I also just started taking flexiril 5mg. About 3 to 4 weeks ago one of my feet started swelling. My mouth is extremely dry in the morning and I have frequent urination during the night. All thiis started since I started taking the Diovan. I don't have insurance and I recieve treatment at a sliding scale clinic. When I researched the side effects of Diovan, I found that the side effects of the drug include these symptoms. Is it possible that the Diovan is causing the problem?

Hello,

Yes it is very likely that dry mouth and excessive urination is caused by Tab. Diovan but swelling of feet is a rare manifestation of Diovan and is still under study.

One of the ways Diovan reduces the BP is by causing excessive urination and reducing the water in the blood and hence the pressure.

Tab Amlodipine on the other hand is known to cause leg swelling and as you are taking Amlodipine since 2 yrs, it is the likely of it. Until and unless you have any symptomatic problem or any lifestyle problems due to the leg swelling or excessive urination, I would not recommend any change in medication.

The side effects are usually innocent and do not reduce the action of the medication nor does it cause any long term health problem.

Here are my recommendations.

1) It's very important to take the dosage of Tab amlodipine and Tab atenolol in the morning ,single dose and take the dosage of lisinopril in the evening,

2) The leg swelling due to Amlodipine usually reduces on leg elevation and wearing compressive stocking.

3) Control your diet and maintain a healthy diet to reduce the complication of hypertension.

4) Maintain a good exercise regimen to reduce weight by about 8%.It will reduce the need for medication.

Thank you.
