Headache with intense shocking sensations and fever

Resolved question:
yesterday I started to not feel well. Tired, aches in my lower back and legs, tired, lack of appetite, nausea, some congestion, etc. Did not really have a fever. I did develop a fever later in the day and evening. Low grade. Today, I woke up with a fever, it got as high as 101, but the symptom that has been causing me the most discomfort is the headache with intense shocking sensations. If I move my head or eyes it can jolt me, very unpleasant. I did take one advil this morning and it lowered my temp back to 99-100, as of a few minutes ago it was low 99. I have ringing in my ears as well. I also take zoloft and suffer from anxiety/panic disorder. I guess I'm trying to get reassurance if reassurance is warranted for the shocking sensations I keep feeling. What could be causing it? After researching stuff on the internet I'm worried that it could be viral encipilitis. Says it's symptoms mimic the flu. One last piece of info my doctor yesterday did perform a flu test and it came back negative.

Hello,

Thank you for choosing DoctorSpring.

The intense shock sensation / jolting while moving neck is possibly due to a mild peripheral neuropathy set in by the viral infection. Rest of your symptoms are very suggestive of a flu / viral infection.

This is not really dangerous or unusual. And no this not specific or suggestive of viral encephalitis. So at this stage you need not worry about this. I will note down some warning signs which you should look for , in case the symptoms persists.

1. Loss of consciousness / seizures / severe dizziness
2. A tight neck
3. Severe / persistant nausea or vomiting
4. Sever high grade fever, which is not resolving
5. Confusion / altered feelings , touch sensations / memory disturbances.
6. Weakness of limbs / unsteadiness of gait

The ringing in the ear makes me suspect a ear infection (labryinthitis) . This infection could also be caused by a bacteria. So if the fever persists beyond 2 days I would recommend a course of antibiotics.

You should take some rest (But absolute bed rest is not necessary). You can continue taking Advil. Drink plenty of water.

Hope this helps

Hi Doc,
Thanks for the advice. Today I feel much better then I did yesterday. No fever, but still I'm not 100%. My main sypmton now is when I do cough which is rare, maybe 1x an hour I do have pretty thick, colored mucus. Could this be something new or just the virus running it's course? I'm also concerned because my wife is now sick I assumed she caught what I had except she threw up 1x and I never did. Could it still be the same virus? I'm just worried that if she has something else and I catch that my anxiety won't be able to handle it.

Hello,

Cough just follows the viral infection. There is nothing to worry about that. It will just clear up any mucous. Should resolve without any trouble in couple of days.
Regarding your wife's symptoms - It does not seem related to me. But does not look troublesome either. Just take a bland non spicy diet. Drink plenty of water. Unless there are no new symptoms or vomiting you can just observe.
You can get back to me if there is anything.

Hope this helps
