My wife has an itching area near the armpits. It started on one the right side as a small spot but it got bigger over time. And now it's also on the left side. It's burning a lot (intermittently) and itching all the time. The burning gets worse with touching.

I can understand your concern.
You seem to be having fungal infection mixed with bacterial infection.
Its called tinea corporis.
I would recommend application of terbinafine cream mixed with Mupirocin cream twice a day for two weeks.
For itching, tab. Claritin once daily at night can be taken.
