Query about transmission of infection from dogs.

Resolved question:
I was in a Home Depot and a dog was in there. He looked clean and well taken care of. He sniffed my hand and clothes, as I have dogs.

Anyhow, I briefly petted him on the head. I bit my nail awhile later. I am not sure if it was the same hand. CannI catch any germs or diseases? I have to have surgery next week and am worried.

Hello,

Thank you for choosing DoctorSpring.

No, under usual circumstances you will NOT catch any infection or illness from this contact. You need not worry. I assume that there was no bite or direct injury from the dog. Germs are not that easily transmitted through gut as the body has enough protective mechanism. Nevertheless It is a good idea to wash your hands after handling pets.

Hope this helps
