Recurrent sorethroat, cough and fever. Cause?

Resolved question:
Dear Friends,

My sons, 15 and 13 seem to get a soar throat, severe cough and then fever at least twice a month. I have taken them to the doctor many times, they have gone through several layers of antibiotics, and unfortunately, they seem to get sick the minute anytime someone coughs, or sneezes near them.

We live in Miami, they are highly competitive soccer players, and seem to be always living and playing at 75%. This has gone on for a year now and they have been tested for everything!!!!!

I pump them with vitamin C, Immune building probiotics and homeopathic flu and sold stuff, they eat healthy, and live out in the sun all day long basically...

HELP PLEASE!!!

Thanks,

Art

Dear Parent,
Thank you for your query at DoctorSpring.com
I can understand your concerns. But, the problem that you have narrated has multiple issues at multiple levels:
1. If anyone coughs or sneezes near someone, viral infections get transmitted through droplets. Anyone is likely to catch such infections exposed. It is important to train kids to cover their noses and mouths while coughing or sneezing. This habit has to be encouraged by parents of all children. You need to talk to other parents about this.
2. Why would they need multiple layers of antibiotics for such viral infections? Antibiotic abuse in this manner would only make your boys susceptible to infection from more dangerous bugs. Kindly stop using antibiotics for these episodes of URI.
3. What do you mean by 'have been tested for everything'? Have they been screened for sinusitis? Have they ha their ears examined? Have they had their vitamin D or antibody levels tested? Have they been screened for any nasal polyps, asthma and allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis? Saying that they have been tested for everything does not help.
4. Regarding vitamin C, Immune building probiotics and homeopathic pills....Personally, none of these have any role in building immunity or protecting your boys. So please do not get drawn by commercials. Vitamin C in small doses was considered to be helpful in decreasing the duration of flu, but even that concept is long outdated.
Kindly provide details of all tests and consultations you have obtained for the aforementioned problem.
