Severe backache after bending over

Resolved question:
Three days ago, I was sitting down and bent over to tie my shoes when my lower back started throbbing. I could barely move and everything I did hurt. I am now able to walk a little but it is still very painful. I have not been able to go to work for the last three days. Any idea what this could be? I am only 26 years old and I did not expect to have back pain so soon.

Hello,

Thank you for asking your query at DoctorSpring.

I have read your question with diligence.

It looks from your details that most likely you may be suffering from a sacro iliac dysfunction .This can be their due to malposition during bending. This is a self limiting condition. Another possibility is a bulged disc . This occurs in young age, and can cause similar symptoms. The fact that you still have pain makes me suspect this condition.

And a third and rare possibility is a small fracture. Since you have Panhypopituitarism you have higher risk for bone demineralization (due to steroid suppiment / lack of GH etc). So it is always prudent to consider this.

If you have access to medical help, I recommend evaluation and if needed an XRay. Otherwise for now I recommend bed rest in supine flat position or side wise position. Take an OTC anti inflammatory pain medication like Ibuprofen 400 mg twice to three times a day in consult with your Doctor (After food). if the pain is persisting even after two days it is wise to get a Xray and further evaluation.

Hope this helps

Thank you for your answer. I have one follow up question. Over the past 24 hours, I have noticed the pain shift more to one side of my back. Also, I'm not sure if this is related, but I have some slight pain when urinating. Do these new symptoms point to any specific diagnosis? Aain, thank you.

Hello,

The pain in urination is not a specific sign. The shifting of the pain to one side suggests possible nerve compression (common in disc prolapse). You should get absolute bed rest for now. I thin you should go on for an immediate evaluation - Xray followed by MRI Spine.

Thank you
