Sorethroat, cough not helped by cough syrup. Treatment?

Resolved question:
iI had a very bad chest infection which started on Easter Monday and lasted for three weeks. I was slightly wheezy but the coughing was the worst. My father used to be a Pharmacist and he told me to get a particular cough bottle which really helped. Over the weekend i began to get a sore throat and last night developed a cough again. The more I cough, the sorer my throat becomes. My head is sore and my neck feels strained with coughing. What should be my next step.

Hello,
Thanks for your query at DoctorSpring.com
I understand your concern.
Most likely you are suffering from pharyngitis.
You need to get chest examination and X-ray done to rule out lower expiratory tract infection.
The pharyngitis is viral/bacterial depends on throat swab culture and depending upon that antibiotics may be started.
Till then you can start taking paracetamol 500 mg tds (three times a day).
Maintain a good hydration.
Do gargles with saline or warm water mixed with salt every 2-3 hours.
Use cough syrup as required.
Avoid cold/oily food
Hope it helps

Hello,
Without the throat culture, it's not a good idea to start antibiotics though most cases are due to viruses which resolve on its own with above-mentioned measures. Also good oropharyngeal examination and chest examination will rule out any lower respiratory tract infection. You also need to rule out asthma or COPD. Do you have any history of wheezing//respiratory disease in the past in the past?
