Viral Gastroenteritis.

Resolved question:
Hi,
I woke up yesterday with extremely bad stomach cramps and had to take the day off work I slept in bed all day not eating, drinking or moving. At around 1 o'clock I woke up and vomited, couldn't poo. Still felt extremely sick in the stomach like vomiting, my back was aching so bad I had to take panadeine forte to make the pain go away, I then got very heavy headed, dizzy, shaky and itchy. I slept it off. Woke up this morning feeling slightly better had some potato chips for lunch but the stomach pain is increasingly worse on the right side of my stomach and slight fevers and still feeling like being sick. Is this just a typical gasto bug?

Hi,
Thanks for posting your query.
I am Dr.R.K and I am pleased to assist you.
I presume you are having this pain in the upper abdomen.
It is difficult to say whether it is due to a stomach bug. Most often a stomach bug causes loose stools along with abdominal cramps. However it is not always a rule. It could be a bacterial stomach bug (also called bacterial gastroenteritis).

Since you have some resolution it is a good sign. For now you should take a bland, non spicy meal for 1 or 2 days. You can take an anti ulcer medication like Prilosec once a day for 7 days without any food.

Since it is a continuous type of pain along with nausea, vomiting, the other possibilities are acute cholecystitis ( gallbladder issue) and acute pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas). So if the symptoms persist A complete blood count, a liver function test, serum amylase/lipase and Ultrasound/ CT scan of the abdomen of the abdomen may be done to find the cause. Do not consume alcohol till the symptoms resolve.
I hope that answers your question.
Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr.R.K.
