Hello,

Thank you for your consult at DoctorSpring.com.

From the symptoms you have described you are probably having acute bronchitis. It is the inflammation of the respiratory tract (mainly large bronchi) resulting in severe cough with or without expectoration. It typically develops due to virus, usually the flu or cold viruses. In most cases, acute bronchitis gets better within several days. But your cough can last for several weeks after the infection is gone. Due to this prolonged cough you chest muscles get fatigue resulting in chest pain. So you can get relieved from your chest pain if you get your acute bronchitis treated. Treatment is typically symptomatic.

Treatments recommended are:
1. Cough syrup such as grilinctus can be given to suppress cough
2. Steam inhalation
3. As viruses cause most cases of acute bronchitis, antibiotics should not be used unless microscopic examination of gram stained sputum reveals large numbers of bacteria
4. If you have severe pain you can have over the counter medication like ibuprofen.
5. Breathing exercise and relaxation techniques will help you to breathe easily.
6. Eat soft diet, which gives you instant energy and is easily digestible.
7. Drink plenty of warm water.
8. Give sufficient rest to your body.
9. A humidifier may moisten the air and ease your cough

Consult your nearby doctor if your cough persist more than 3 weeks or if you have fever over 100.4 degrees.

Hope this helps, please feel free to discuss further.

Regards
