Thank you for using asks a doctor service from doctor's spring. I will try to answer your queries to the best possible. Bipolar disorder is a condition characterized by disturbance of mood, both manic and depressive. They are four types of bipolar disorder namely mania, hypomania, depression and mixed.

In mania, Bipolar patients usually present with feeling energized, high confidence and self esteem with grandiose ideas, increased appetite and needing lesser sleep, Disinhibited, having poor self regulation. While in the depressive phase , patient usually is depressed most of the day , reduced interest in daily activities, loss of energy, loss of confidence and self esteem.

Hypomania is a milder form of mania and mixed bipolar disorder consists of both mania and depressive features and is of two types : type 1: here the patient has one episode of mania and along with depression, while in type 2-patient has no manic episodes only depression .

Bipolar disorders are diagnosed by evaluating the patient s mood for a given period along with being subjected to a mood questionnaire. Besides that, complete blood and urine tests, Thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) are also done. It is not possible for a person to cheat on a test as he is evaluated for a long time period and during that time it is difficult for him to masks the symptoms since it's a cyclical change and in the given time frame the patient would experience symptoms of mania, depression, hypomania or mixed.

I hope I have answered your queries. Feel free to answer any follow up questions.
