Resolved question:
I have a broken thumb that had been in a cast for 4 weeks I felt a pop today when lifting something. It is now a little sore. Could it have broken again? It was sergically pinned.

Hello,
Welcome at Doctor Spring.

I have read your question with diligence.

After union of fractured bone surgeon generally remove cast & pin after confirming union clinically & with x ray. There are little chances that it refracture, specially at this young age of 31 yr.If you feel following symptoms then please go for a check x ray to evaluate a refracture-

-If there is excessive swelling at thumb.

-If there is abnormal movements at thumb.

-If you are able to feel crepitus at thumb.

-If you are having excessive pain on little movement of thumb.

The little soreness can be there due to release of adhesion.

Hope this will help you.

With best wishes.

Patient replied :

Thank you although the thumb is still in cast for another 2 weeks so I have not yet had an x ray to check union or had the pin out yet.I don't think there is any swelling although I can't see and no pain today.

Thank you for your reply.
It looks from your details that you should not worry at present but for safety a check x ray is advisable.
