Hello,
Thank you for your query at DoctorSpring.com
Pregnancy can be terminated up to the 7th week, using a combination of medicines - Mifepristone and Misoprostol.
However this should be done under the supervision of a gynaecologist, in case there is excessive bleeding or incomplete abortion.
The regimen that should be followed is :
Day 1 : Take 200 mg Mifepristone, preferably night time 2 hours after dinner.
( On taking this medicines, within 1-2 hours contractions will start, and in some cases even spontaneous abortion might occur, which will pass out like small clots along with bleeding. The bleeding is never expected to be severe, and it should just be like heavy periods )
Within the next 48 hours ( Preferably after 2 days around the same time )- Take 800 micro- grams of Misoprostol, which comes as 4 capsules of 200 micrograms, and it has to be kept behind the tongue for absorption, rather than taking it orally with water. On taking this medicine spontaneous abortion will occur within the next 24 hours, and as i said earlier, there will be small clots, and heavy period, but not severe bleeding.)
Before taking this medicine, pregnancy should be confirmed to be intra-uterine using an ultrasound.
Also it is better that for the next 2 weeks, you take adequate bed rest with good diet and sleep, to recover from the induced abortion. Also the bleeding is expected to last from 10-12 days like a heavy period, with gradually declining level of bleeding over the entire period.
If followed carefully, it is a safe procedure but should be done under the supervision of a gynaecologist.
The other surgical options are Dilatation and Curretage.( D&C ), which is resorted too after 7 weeks up till 20 weeks.
Hope this was helpful,
Regards.
